Turnip fries taste just as good as crispy french fries but with fewer carbs making them good for a keto diet. If you are on a keto diet and love fries this is a great healthy substitute for French fries which you cannot eat on the keto diet due to the high content of calories in the potatoes. These turnip fries are baked in the oven for a low carb side dish or snack.

Turnips are a root vegetable with a bit of mild bitter flavour. The taste is between potatoes and radish or cabbage  but with a texture like potatoes. When they are cooked, the bitterness gets less intense and becomes slightly sweet like sweet potatoes or carrots.

I recommend you to choose smaller turnips as they are less bitter than larger turnips. The larger the turnip, the bitter it becomes. Turnips can be eaten raw or cooked. Just like potatoes, there are many ways to cook turnips which include baking, mashing, roasting, making soups and adding them to stews.

Turnips can be cooked peeled or with the skin on. You can spice these turnips with any flavours you like just like you do when making keto kale chips.

Turnips are packed with nutrients which include vitamin A, B, C, E, K, as well as  minerals  like calcium,potassium, magnesium and iron. They are also a good source of protein, omega 3 fatty acid and fibre. Turnips are good for keto diet especially when you want to lose weight because the fibre in them makes you fuller for longer. Fibre also helps in keeping blood sugar levels stable.

Making keto baked turnips fries is easy but the results are satisfying. You can serve these fries as a side dish to keto pork chops or keto ginger steak. You can also serve them as a snack with any dip of your choice like zucchini hummus dip

When making turnip fries, start by peeling the turnips then cut into fries. Thin sized fries tend to cook faster than thick sized ones so you have to remember to adjust the baking time depending on the size of the chips. After cutting the fries, mix oil with your favourite spices and herbs then coat the fries.

Arrange the fries in a baking sheet in a single layer. Avoid layering the fries close to each other because they will steam and become soggy. Bake the fries and flip half way through. Return to the oven and continue baking until they are crispy.

Ingredients For Keto Baked Turnip Fries

6 small turnips

½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon paprika

1 teaspoon black pepper

2 tablespoons olive oil

Fresh thyme

Method For Keto Baked Turnip Fries

1. Preheat oven to 180°c

2. Peel the skin off the turnips with a potato peeler.

3. Cut fries and put in a bowl.

4. Add sea salt, paprika, pepper, oil and mix until all the fries are coated.

5. Transfer to a baking sheet in a single layer.

6. Sprinkle fresh thyme on top and bake for 20minutes

7. Remove the baking sheet from oven and flip the fries

8. Continue to bake another 15 minutes or until fries are crispy.

9. Remove from the oven and serve.
